GRET has been active in Algeria since the mid-2000s, in three primary areas—natural resource management, trade negotiations, and strengthening actors—through expertise and institutional support activities.
In 2010, Algeria signed an Association Agreement with the European Union (the EMAA) and is negotiating its adhesion to the World Trade Organization (WTO), which comes with obligations in terms of agriculture and trade policies. GRET provided the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) with assistance implementing its commitments under the Association Agreement and preparing for adhesion to the WTO. In partnership with Algerian experts and researchers (IRD, CIRAD), GRET conducted studies on the EMAA and the European Union’s import system, and elaborated “pedagogical kits” on the WTO Agreements pertaining to agriculture. This work was conducted with the aim of setting up a coordination structure within the MARD in charge of monitoring trade agreements and defining MARD’s strategy.
