Working in the development aid is, for us:

> acting on development,
> producing and disseminating references for action, and,
> contributing to public debate on development options and strategies.

Acting on development
Local players are the ones who build their changes. Acting on development means being present in countries and involved in action, alongside these local players, to build sustainable solutions with them and consolidate their institutions.

In collaboration with local organisations, we identify and conduct development projects that in-crease populations’ incomes and reduce their vulnerability, give them access to quality services, and strengthen their capacity to negotiate with local institutions and the State.

We also place our know-how at the service of development aid players and are active in the field as service providers for the implementation of projects, expertise visits, methodology support and assessments; we contribute to the evolution of public policies to benefit the greatest number.

Producing and Disseminating References for Action
When exercising their profession, development players need to be able to mobilise suitable technical and methodological references. Communication for development has been at the heart of GRET’s identity since it was founded. Based on our experience, and in partnership with others, we produce and disseminate knowledge and methodology references for action, making proven know-how and tools available to development players from developed and developing countries.

We produce and publish practical factsheets, technical manuals, and practical handbooks, thus making operational knowledge available on numerous subjects.
We analyse our practices, in an experience capitalisation process, and publish the lessons thus learnt.
We run Internet sites with a wealth of online resources, providing easy access to this knowledge.

Contributing to Public Debate on Development Aid Policies.
The rules of the international game are still deeply unfair, in particular as regards trade. Beyond their official goals, aid policies are too frequently built on ideological models or unsuitable procedures. Based on our experience, we take part in the public debate on development aid and North-South relations.

We contribute our expertise to the analysis of the effects of international policies on developing countries and to the assessment of aid policies.
We participate in aid policy debates, add our experience to advocacy campaigns, and participate in elaborating alternatives.

These three modes of action are, for us, necessary and complementary to contribute to signifi-cant changes in the living conditions of populations and in North-South relations. All three rely on strong convictions and principles, set forth in our Charter of Commitments: know players and situations, work in partnership with local institutions, experiment and innovate, institutionally consolidate our modes of action, and learn from our experiences.
