To favour coordination among their activities in favour of African media, the principle donors decided to launch an informal network of donors supporting the African media called the “Partners for Media in Africa” (ParMA) Network. GRET provided the network’s technical secretariat between 1996 and 2002. The network brought together roughly thirty European and North American institutions and facilitated the circulation of information among them. Several tools were designed to support communication: annual exchange meetings on specific themes, a fortnightly e-newsletter, an Internet site that centralises shared documents and databases, the production of Media Status Reports by country, and annual studies. The annual meetings allowed members to exchange on subjects of common interest, and keep themselves informed on evolutions in the programmes of various donors. The network’s last meeting was held in Washington in March 2002 on the invitation of the World Bank.

Publication of 5 handbooks in French and Portuguese for journalist and media executive training and self-training in ACP countries. These handbooks were written by African press specialists. Their content was adapted specifically to the working conditions and specific context in Africa, thus meeting the need for pedagogic documents noted by many of those active in the sector and revealed by a prior study. The handbooks are published in print runs of 5,000 copies for French and 1,000 copies for Portuguese; they are sold at the affordable price of 2 euros and distributed in Africa by a network created specifically for this and made up of professional resource centres, journalism schools, and SYFIA agency offices. They are occasionally purchased by donors' delegations in Africa as pedagogic supports for their specific actions in favour of national press.

Its main objective was to keep network members informed of donors’ activities and sector news.
