GRET has been present in Congo since 1994. Its activities are not focused on emergency or post-conflict relief but attempt to foster a sense of continuity and sustainably strength local stakeholders.
GRET undertakes projects supporting local dynamics in fields as diverse as microfinance, infrastructure rehabilitation, supplying large cities, agricultural development, small enter-prises, communication, and documentation.
At the time being, GRET is present only in the governmental zone in the provinces of Ka-tanga, Kasai, Bandundu, and Bas Congo, as well as in the city of Kinshasa.
Some of the main projects underway in mid-2002 are:

• Helping the food product merchants' and transporters' associations of Bandundu maintain farm roads and price transparency and wholesale market operations
• Draining and rehabilitating Kimbanseke - Kinshasa access roads
• Organising and supplying Kinshasa farmers with inputs and agricultural equipment
• Providing the Information and Documentation Centre for Development in Congo (CID, in Kinshasa) with operational support
• Identifying priority infrastructure needs and implementing a plan of action in Kasai Prov-ince
• Installing water supply points in Bandundu Province

		Water and Sanitation Installations in Six Health Structures in Bandundu, Congo (DRC)

		This project aims to improve the sanitary status in health zones in Bandundu by building 2 springs; equipping dispensaries with latrines, drinking water cisterns, placenta pits, and incinerators; and rehabilitating 5 drinking water supply systems.

		Revitalising Cooperative Networks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

		The project consisted of supporting the revitalisation of three cooperative savings and loan networks (COOCEC CEAC in Kinshasa and Bas-Congo, and COOCEC BANDUN-DU and CAMEC in Bas-Congo) that were hit hard by the financial and monetary crisis of the early 1990s. This revitalisation was accomplished by re-stimulating the credit unions' associative structures, re-organising credit union management, testing lines of credit, and equipping them with means of transportation and communication.

		Consolidation and Self-Sufficiency for a Credit Union Network in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

		This project aims to provide methodology support to ADECOM, a local NGO, to create and then make autonomous a network of 10 savings and credit unions in outlying areas of Kinshasa.
