GRET has been present
in Congo since 1994. Its activities are not focused on emergency or post-conflict
relief but attempt to foster a sense of continuity and sustainably strength
local stakeholders.
GRET undertakes projects supporting local dynamics in fields as diverse
as microfinance, infrastructure rehabilitation, supplying large cities,
agricultural development, small enter-prises, communication, and documentation.
At the time being, GRET is present only in the governmental zone in the
provinces of Ka-tanga, Kasai, Bandundu, and Bas Congo, as well as in the
city of Kinshasa.
Some of the
main projects underway in mid-2002 are:
- Helping the food
product merchants' and transporters' associations of Bandundu maintain
farm roads and price transparency and wholesale market operations
- Draining and rehabilitating
Kimbanseke - Kinshasa access roads
- Organising and
supplying Kinshasa farmers with inputs and agricultural equipment
- Providing the
Information and Documentation Centre for Development in Congo (CID,
in Kinshasa) with operational support
- Identifying priority
infrastructure needs and implementing a plan of action in Kasai Prov-ince
- Installing water
supply points in Bandundu Province
