GRET has been present in Congo since 1994. Its activities are not focused on emergency or post-conflict relief but attempt to foster a sense of continuity and sustainably strength local stakeholders.
GRET undertakes projects supporting local dynamics in fields as diverse as microfinance, infrastructure rehabilitation, supplying large cities, agricultural development, small enter-prises, communication, and documentation.
At the time being, GRET is present only in the governmental zone in the provinces of Ka-tanga, Kasai, Bandundu, and Bas Congo, as well as in the city of Kinshasa.

The project consisted of supporting the revitalisation of three cooperative savings and loan networks (COOCEC CEAC in Kinshasa and Bas-Congo, and COOCEC BANDUN-DU and CAMEC in Bas-Congo) that were hit hard by the financial and monetary crisis of the early 1990s. This revitalisation was accomplished by re-stimulating the credit unions' associative structures, re-organising credit union management, testing lines of credit, and equipping them with means of transportation and communication.
