Saint-Louis du Sud, a semi-rural commune with a population of 75,000, suffers from failing essential services and a lack of infrastructures for its economic development. In the field of drinking water and sanitation, GRET strengthened the Saint- Louis du Sud drinking water and sanitation supply committee (CAEPA) and the infrastructures, and extended the network by building a reservoir and raising awareness of water resource protection.
For the agriculture component, GRET conducted an agrarian diagnostic of FIDEL’s irrigation scheme, a socio-historical analysis of the irrigation system’s operation, and two studies on the rice commodity chain and the feasibility of renovating the irrigation system. Consultation workshops were held with farmers and actors in the irrigation scheme on rehabilitating the irrigation system and how to manage it.
In terms of nutrition, a qualitative diagnostic was conducted on the food, hygiene and care practices of pregnant and breastfeeding women and children between the ages of 0 and 24 months. Training courses were organized for the staff of four health structures, the heads of local organizations, leading professors, community agents and a dispensary.
