Financial Systems for Rural Development: Proceedings of the Regional Seminar Organised in Laos, October 1995, under the auspices of the Bank of the Lao People's Democratic Republic
GRET, CCL, IRAM
Two Bilingual Editions (French-English and French-Lao)
French Title: Les systèmes financiers pour le développement rural. Actes du séminaire régional organisé au Laos en octobre 1995 sous l'égide de la Banque de la République démocratique populaire lao.

SUMMARY

When it comes to rural funding, the situation in the Lao People's Democratic Republic is similar to that in the Kingdom of Cambodia and in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam--a political will to emphasise rural development, a need to set up one or more financial structures and awareness of the need for decentralisation. While each country elaborates its own strategy to reach these goals, they have several factors in common such as recent credit systems and institutional and legal frameworks in the process of being elaborated. This bilingual book (in French and English or English and Lao) covers the essential of the discussions.

The Micro-Economic Impact of Rural Credit in Cambodia
Pascal Bousso, Pierre Daubert, Nathalie Gauthier, Martin Parent, Cécile Ziéglé
French-English Bilingual Edition
French Title: L'impact micro-économique du crédit rural au Cambodge.

SUMMARY

This book presents the results of the research on the microeconomic impact of rural credit in Cambodia carried out between 1995 and 1996. The survey included 743 families in 8 villages located in Kandal, Konpong Speu and Prey Veng Provinces. In 1991, GRET launched a rural credit system. GRET gradually withdrew from the project in favour of a financial institution that is in the process of formalising its status, Ennatien Moulethan Tchonnebat (EMT, "local rural credit" in English). This book starts by shedding light on household budgets and EMT's operational methods. It then presents the theoretical aspects of the impact of credit and the methodology applied. Finally, the research results are given, focusing on a number of subjects such as the nature of the clientele, the various ways the loans are used, the profits they generate, etc.

The Micro-Economic Impact of Rural Credit in Northern Vietnam
Pascale Le Roy, Mathias Robert
French-English Bilingual Edition
French Title: L'impact micro-économique du credit rural au Nord Vietnam.

SUMMARY

The aim of this book is to shed light on microfinance in Vietnam by studying a local situation. It presents the results of a microeconomic impact study of rural credit carried out in 1997 and 1998 that surveyed 175 households in a commune in northern Vietnam. This study addresses two main subjects: the kinds of clients that use the sources of credit we identified and the microeconomic impact that the credit has on clients. This book is part of GRET's ongoing efforts since 1995 to analyse and disseminate information on the impact of microcredit.

Water and Health in Underprivileged Urban Areas
GRET, Water Solidarity Network (pS-Eau)
Available in English or Spanish (out of print in French)
French Title: L'eau et la santé dans les quartiers urbains dévaforisés

SUMMARY
How can one transform the strategic choices of the Rio Earth Summit as set forth in Agenda 21 into concrete programmes? The French government wanted to contribute to this task. In February 1994, it brought together experts and practitioners from more than forty countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas in order to treat a crucial aspect of this issue: the ties between water and health in underprivileged neighbourhoods of third-world cities. This book offers a useful record of the work produced by this meeting.
