Microfinance

Microfinance has matured. Promoted as a favored instrument for financial inclusion, attracting donors and investors drawn to the potential for social and financial yields, and backed by more than 30 years of experience, microfinance serves more than 150 million low-income people worldwide.
The spectacular growth in microfinance, notably in emerging markets, has included millions of poor people in the formal financial system. It now participates in the search for new service models integrating non-bank actors and mobile technologies to reach the ‘un-banked’ masses in developing countries. This strong growth has produced its own set of by-products, which have received heavy media coverage. In response to criticisms, microfinance advocates for appropriate regulations and intends to reaffirm the fundamental aspects in its approach. This determination fuels efforts and multiple advances in the field of social responsibility: protecting clients and social performances. From client education to donors’ commitments, it must be present in each link in the chain.
For more than 20 years, GRET has accompanied the creation of microfinance institutions (MFIs) around the world, adopting the position of investor-NGO in several such institutions, and has helped existing institutions build their capacities and develop innovative financial products. Through its participation in the CERISE Network, a French platform for experience capitalization and studies, GRET contributes to work elaborating and disseminating social performance criteria for microfinance. Finally, GRET is a key actor in knowledge dissemination within the sector, notably by running, in partnership with ADA, the www.lamicrofinance.org portal, the largest French-language site offering resources on the subject.
