Myanmar: a cookery competition to promote quality nutrition

A cookery competition was held on 11 October last in the village of Kan Kone, located in the county of Bogale. This activity was organised as part of the Delta Rise project (in French) (“Rural intensification for sustainable economic development in the Delta”) initiated in 2015 by GRET and German NGO Welthungerhilfe in 15 villages in the county of Bogale, in south-west Myanmar.

The aim of this competition was to promote behavioural changes and empowerment of local populations in terms of nutrition. Five families from various villages (Sin Kwin, Pyin Ma kone, Bu Tin Su, Pei Nei Kone and Kan Kone) participated in the event and competed with each other to prepare the best dishes.

Although it was a small local competition, the first prize was awarded based on numerous criteria, such as candidates’ knowledge of nutrition and required hygiene standards. Participants had three hours and a budget of 3,000 kyats (i.e. 1.64 euros) to prepare dishes for their entire family, and for a nine-month old baby.
