This fast-growing reed has been invading the banks of the Senegal River for 30 years, smothering biodiversity and preventing local populations from accessing the river and its resources. Together with its partners, GRET launched an ambitious project in Mauritani (in french)a and subsequently in Senegal (in french) to deal with this typha invasion. The project consists of converting the reed into clean sustainable biofuel, providing a credible alternative to charcoal, and potentially useful for economic development of the region.
All resources produced by GRET on typha (videos, technical manuals, etc.) are now available on www.typha.org.
Are you interested in conversion of typha? Are you in a position to contribute technical, commercial or financial support?
