Since 1995, GRET has been providing innovative responses in Myanmar to reduce the vulnerability of populations and strengthening capacities of governmental institutions while producing references based on its experience.
Myanmar is one of the less developed countries in the ASEAN region. Its economy de-pends mainly on natural resources and agriculture. Limited technical capacities, inadequate infrastructures and administrative constraints are the medium and long term challenges in the agricultural sector. Myanmar is highly vulnerable to climate change: it was even identified as one of the most affected countries between 1994 and 2013.
GRET aims to reduce the vulnerabilities of rural families and small-scale farmers to climate and economic changes and to ensure equal access to technical knowledge and economic services in the Sagaing, Ayeyarwady, Rakhine, Chin and Mandalay regions. It strengthens the capacities of producer groups in order to improve their access to markets for agricultural and livestock products. GRET also supports local organisations and Civil Society organisa-tions to sustainably contribute to improving the livelihood of communities and empowers rural stakeholders to deal with local and national policymakers, public services and the pri-vate sector.
GRET also supports the creation of autonomous services and institutions. It strengthens the capacities of governmental institutions to ensure accountable and equitable services to the Myanmar population. GRET produces references based on its long experience in Myanmar in order to encourage national and regional discussions on policies.
Myint Su, GRET’s representative in Myanmar, took up her position in September 2017. Before joining GRET, she worked for 20 years in the development sector, in particular as a trainer in participatory rural appraisal. She answered our questions.
