The overall objective of the Project is that bamboo sector provides stable and sustainable incomes and employments, contributing to poverty alleviation and conserving forest functions and upland environment in Houaphan province. Thanks to the project, it is expected that improved capacity of provincial and district authorities and the emergence of local non-state actors will create a sustainable ground for co-management and co-activation of the bamboo sector development strategy.
Three main results are expected:
- Local authorities ensure land tenure rights for bamboo plantations and support market orientated natural forest management;
- Bamboo producer groups are able to take up responsibilities in managing forest sustainably, develop bamboo plantations, deliver extension services, initiate locally based handicraft and pre-processing units supplying markets and industry;
- Effective coordination between state actors, producer groups and private sector supports the implementation of the provincial bamboo strategy and create opportunities to involve Lao scientists.
