For the French Global Fund for Environment, Feasibility study of the projet Management of the territories of conservation: new actors, new practices, new impacts in West Africa, implemented by IUCN PAPACO.
Considering the poor and fragile results of the traditional methods of conservation (based on creating protected areas and reserves managed by the State) in West Africa, the general objective of the project is to consolidate, capitalize and diffuse a reference frame of seven experiments in managing remarkable natural spaces, by reinforcing the capacities of decentralized or community-run local territorial management authorities and of local conservation NGOs. The specific objectives are: (1) to reinforce, in 7 sites, the local capacity of 7 NGOs for the conservation of remarkable natural spaces; (2) to support, the implementation of actions towards conservation of remarkable natural spaces under the control of decentralized or community-managed, with the support of local conservation NGOs; (3) To capitalize on the lessons learned by the experiments led on the 7 sites, in order to contribute to the effective implementation and adaptation of public policies on decentralized management of natural resources in 5 West African countries.
