The ability to influence societal choices, contribute to the local political dialogue and assert one’s rights is as important as technical and economic progress. GRET strengthens actors of social change to build more inclusive social policies and more democratic societies.
To guarantee democracy and citizenship, everyone must be recognized as a member of society with fundamental civil, political, economic and social rights such as the right to be informed, to receive an education, or to express oneself freely. In less advantaged societies, these rights can be strengthened by supporting various groups of actors of social change and carrying citizens’ voices so that they can contribute to the public debates on the societal choices that concern them. This also means fostering access to information and knowledge through better mastery of information and communication technologies, contributing to the existence of independent press and a dynamic associative fabric, and even strengthening the dialogue between the government, civil society and citizens.
In emerging democracies and post-crisis countries, the media have a capital role to play in fostering democratic debate, ensuring pluralism of opinion, and helping consolidate the rule of law. GRET facilitates dialogue and collaboration between journalists and public figures to promote responsible news coverage that better addresses citizens.
